Planning a Summer Wedding in 2027: A Photographer's Guide

A summer wedding gives you long days, warm light and gardens at their best. It also brings peak-season demand, strong midday sun and the occasional downpour. These six things will help your 2027 wedding photograph beautifully, whether you are marrying at a London venue or somewhere further afield.

1. Book your date early

Summer Saturdays are the most requested dates of the year, and photographers, venues and planners fill them first. A good rule is to get in touch about a year ahead for June to August, as soon as your date and venue are confirmed. If your date is flexible, a Friday or Sunday, or a date in May or September, can open up more choice and often a calmer day. When you enquire, send the date, the venue and the kind of wedding you are planning, and I will confirm whether I am free.

2. Plan portraits around the late sunset

In London the sun sets after 9pm in June and July, and closer to 8pm by late August. The softest, most flattering light comes in the hour before sunset, which is very late for many guests and families. Decide early whether you want that light. If you do, we can take a short set of couple portraits earlier in the day, then slip away for a few minutes of golden light once the meal is under way. If you would rather not wait, the first hour after an afternoon ceremony works well, especially in shade.

3. Deal with the midday sun

From about 11am to 3pm the sun is high and hard. It puts dark shadows under the eyes, blows out white dresses and makes people squint. If you can, keep couple portraits out of this window and use it for what suits it: the meal, the speeches and group photographs in open shade. If your ceremony falls in the middle of the day, seat guests in the shade where possible and tell me early so I can plan the framing. Open shade under trees or beside a building gives soft, even light.

4. Keep everyone cool and comfortable

Temperatures above 30 degrees are no longer unusual in a London summer, and heat shows in photographs: shiny skin, wilting hair and tired faces. Choose breathable fabrics where you can and ask your makeup artist about a setting spray and a long-wear base. Some sunscreens leave a pale cast in flash pictures, so test yours before the day (I explain more in 5 things to know before your bridal shoot). Provide water for the wedding party, keep a fan or parasol to hand, and plan a cool room for outfit changes and breaks. A relaxed couple always looks better than a hot one.

5. Have a wet-weather plan

A British summer can turn quickly. Ask your venue where the ceremony and photographs move if it rains, and choose two or three sheltered spots in advance, such as a covered entrance, a staircase or a conservatory. Clear umbrellas photograph well. Overcast skies are also kind to skin and detail, so a grey day is not a disaster. 6. Build a timeline with room to breathe

Long summer days tempt people to pack more in. Leave a buffer between events, allow 20 to 30 minutes for each change of outfit, and share your must-have shots and family group list before the day so nothing is missed. Ask your venue about confetti and petal rules, and agree who will gather the family for group photographs so the pictures move quickly. Then let the day breathe.
